Ness, P. (2008).
The knife of never letting go. Cambridge, Mass: Candlewick Press.
This is the story of a town of men in
where the only boy is Todd Hewitt. The settlers were infected with a Noise germ
that makes everyone’s thoughts loud enough for everyone to hear. There are no private thoughts. Todd is about
to become a man but the town is hiding something from him. Todd and Manchee his
dog, notice a silence in the Noise. When Todd’s foster parents find out about
the silence, they tell him he must leave right away and forever. He decides to
leave town with his dog. As they travel they come across a girl and wonder why
she wasn’t killed like the others. She was the lone survivor of a spaceship
crash coming from the old world to the new world. Together they runaway while
being followed by Aaron and the Prentisstown army who are trying to kill them.
They finally get to Haven where they thought they could be safe.
A story with lots of tension and suspense. A
book for grades nine and up. Other books by this author include, The Ask and
the Answer, Monsters of Men, and More Than This.
