A second civil war is fought over abortion and to end it, a
compromise has been set. In order to end
the abortion, parents can choose to have their children unwound at the age of
13 through 17 in a harvest camp. Unwounded means they have every part of their
bodies transferred to be donated to another body. Conner, Lev, and Risa are
teens chosen for various reasons to be unwounded. One for being uncontrollable,
another for religious purposes, and the last for not being a ward of the state
with a shrinking budget. As they meet they find reasons to fight back. They
join an underground railroad for unwinds. They meet others like them hoping to
survive past their 18th birthday when they become exempt from the
unwinding.
