Chris Crutcher Book
Crutcher, C. (2001). Whale Talk. New York, NY: HarperCollins Children’s Books.

T.J. Jones is of athletic build, an adoptive teen of loving parents from Washington State, and deals with anger issues since childhood.  But injustice fills him with anger. When high school football star Mike bullies Chris, T.J sets out to form a team of misfit swimmers (All Night Merman) as a sign of revenge.  With the help of a friendly school coach and a homeless man who helps to coach them, the team that had been bullied actually thrives. As they succeed in meeting letterman requirements to earn letter jackets of their own, they upset some people.   But continue to fight for each other along the way building lifelong friendships and losing a father.

This realistic fiction novel of prejudice delivers a powerful message about social issues and team success. Great book for ages 12 and older. Other books written by this author include, Deadline, Period 8, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, Running Lose, and The Crazy Horse Electric Game.
